If you travel frequently, you know the drill: take off your shoes, empty your pockets, pull out your laptop, and wait in line.
The Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) security screening process can be time-consuming and frustrating, especially if you’re running late for a flight.
But what if we told you there’s a way to avoid the hassle of taking off your shoes and emptying your pockets every time you go through security?
TSA Pre-Check is a program that allows low-risk travelers to undergo a streamlined security screening process.
Here is what you need to know about TSA Pre-Check, including how to sign up and the benefits of using it.
What is TSA Pre-Check?
TSA Pre-Check is a program administered by the Transportation Security Administration that allows low-risk travelers to undergo a streamlined security screening process.
To be eligible for TSA Pre-Check, you must be a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident. You also need to have a clean background check and no criminal history.
Once approved for TSA Pre-Check, you’ll be issued a Known Traveler Number (KTN). When you book a flight, you’ll need to enter your KTN in the “Known Traveler Number” field.
If you’re traveling with an airline that participates in TSA Pre-Check, you’ll be able to use the dedicated TSA Pre-Check lane at security. This means you won’t have to take off your shoes, empty your pockets, or remove your laptop from its case (at the time of this writing.)
What are the benefits of TSA Pre-Check?
The most significant benefit of TSA Pre-Check is the time saved. If you’re a frequent traveler, going through the TSA Pre-Check line can save you a lot of time.
In addition, TSA Pre-Check is convenient if you’re traveling with young children or elderly adults. Having TSA Pre-Check can make the security screening process less stressful for everyone involved.
Another benefit of TSA Pre-Check is that it’s available at most major airports in the United States. So, even if you’re traveling to a smaller airport, chances are you’ll be able to use the TSA Pre-Check line.
How do I sign up for TSA Pre-Check?
If you’re interested in signing up for TSA Pre-Check, you can do so online or in person at select enrollment centers.
To sign up online, you’ll need to create an account with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
The online application takes about 5-10 minutes to complete. You’ll need to provide personal information, such as your name, email address, and date of birth.
The next step is to visit an enrollment center. Your information will be verified, and your fingerprints and photo will be taken. You need to pay $85.00 (at the time of this writing.)
You’ll be issued a Known Traveler Number once approved for TSA Pre-Check. You can use this number when booking flights on participating airlines.
