How to Treat / Minimize Sunburn When You’re Traveling


Sunburn is one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. Unfortunately, when you’re enjoying the beaches on your travel, you can’t completely avoid having them.

First-degree burns caused by sunburn can take days or even weeks to heal. And if you’ve ever had a second-degree burn, you know just how excruciating the pain can be.

There are a few things you can do to ease the pain of sunburn, but ultimately, the best thing you can do is to avoid getting sunburned in the first place.

Here are a few tips to help you treat and minimize it.

Wear sunscreen

This one seems like a no-brainer, but it’s worth repeating. Wearing sunscreen is the best way to prevent sunburn.

Make sure to choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and apply it liberally to all exposed skin. Remember to reapply it every two hours or more if you’re swimming or sweating.

Wear protective clothing

In addition to sunscreen, wearing protective clothing is another great way to prevent sunburn. Covering up with long sleeves, long pants, and a wide-brimmed hat can go a long way in keeping your skin safe from the sun’s harmful rays.

Avoid the midday sun

Stay out of the sun during the midday hours, when the sun’s rays are the strongest. If you must be outside during this time, seek shade and stay well-protected with sunscreen and clothing.

Know your skin type

Some people are more prone to sunburn than others. If you have fair skin, freckles, or red hair, you’re more likely to sunburn easily.

Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of fluids helps your body to heal and can also help to ease the pain of sunburn. Make sure to drink plenty of water and minimize or avoid alcohol, which can worsen sunburn.

Take a cool bath

Taking a cool bath or shower can help to ease the pain of sunburn. Avoid using soap, which can further irritate the skin. And be sure to pat your skin dry gently after bathing.

Apply a cool compress

Applying a cool, damp cloth to the affected area can also help ease the pain. Do this several times a day or as needed for best results.

Use aloe vera

Applying aloe vera to sunburned skin can help to soothe the pain and promote healing. You can buy aloe vera gel at most drugstores or cut open an aloe vera leaf and apply the gel directly to your skin.

Take ibuprofen

If the sunburn is severe, you may want to take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen. Be sure to follow the directions on the package and only take the recommended dosage.

See a doctor

If you have a severe sunburn or develop any signs of an infection, see a doctor immediately.
