How to Minimize Sunburn When You’re on the Beach

There’s nothing quite like a summer vacation spent lounging on the beach. But while the sun may be shining and the weather may be warm, there’s one thing that can put a damper on your fun in the sun: sunburn.

While a little bit of sunlight is good for you, too much sun can lead to a painful sunburn. And when you’re on vacation, the last thing you want to deal with is a painful sunburn.

So how can you avoid sunburned on the beach while traveling? Here are a few tips:

1. Use sunscreen.

This may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s worth repeating. When you’re spending time under the sun, be sure to apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen every few hours, even if you’re not swimming.

2. Seek out shade.

As much as possible, try to spend some time under the shade when you’re on the beach. Much better if you could bring an umbrella or a sunbrella to provide shade. Or you can find a spot near a tree or other natural source of shade.

3. Cover up.

If you can’t find any shade, make your own. Wear a hat or a sarong to cover up your skin. And if you’re wearing a swimsuit, wear a t-shirt or a rash guard to protect your skin.

4. Drink plenty of water.

When you’re out in the sun, it’s important to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and avoid alcoholic beverages.

5. Avoid peak sun hours.

If possible, avoid being under the sun during the peak hours of 10 am to 4 pm. This is when the sun’s rays are the strongest.
